Time to Call on our ForeFathers

Over the years I have heard stories of the old where people that are to take positions of authority are subjected to various oat-taking and rituals. I hear that in the east, for example, that before one becomes a leader (be it an Igwe, Ichie etc) he has to wash his tongue so as not to tell lies and wash his eyes so that he must tell the truth of anything he sees. The consequences of going against these rituals are usually deadly as it not only affects the culprit but also affects his family. Also, various situations were being tagged “abomination” and as such were dealt with according to the wishes of the oracle. For example, stealing people’s property, homosexualism, killing innocent people, taking bribe etc were all punishable by the gods.

Then came the church that convinced us that all our traditions are bad. All our traditions were then abolished to suite the new teaching of the church. Chiefs don’t have to wash their tongues and faces before being crowned, leaders don’t have to take oats or perform cleansing rituals before taking up offices. Now what do we have? kings and chiefs forcefully taking over people’s properties, government who is meant to lead and protect the people and the country’s resources now do the contrary. Also, we now need the government to make “paper laws” on gay issues, mass killings, kidnapping etc before we know these things are bad.

Oooh! Those days would have been better for Nigeria. We would have involved Amadioha, Orumila or Sango to recover stolen founds. We would have taken NNPC and the ministry of Finance to Hadeja, Osun or Okija to help us resolve the $48.9bn missing fund. All house of assembly members will be fighting each day not for PDP or APC but for the constituencies they represent as we would have been perform some cleansing rituals before taking the office. We would not waste valuable time discussing about gay bills nor require the endless actions of the police to discover people that desecrate the house of the gods. No, the gods will fight for themselves. They will strike down the perpetuators of these acts at the very instance they conceive these devilish thought in their mind.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that Christianity has no positive side. I am only saying that we should have tried to understand the gains and losses of “African traditional Religion” before doing away with it entirely. What do you thing?
